Shiratani – Short Hike

If you pick up a book about Yakushima and it’s filled with moss-green forests, then the chances are you are looking at Shiratani Unsuikyo.

Shiratani Unsuikyo is relatively easy to access and therefore it is a popular, but its popularity is well-merited.  Due to its ease of access, some visitors consider “going-it-alone” at Shirtani Unsuikyo, but by doing so then SO MUCH is missed.  Consider Shiratani Unsuikyo as a “must do with YES guide” and leave the forest feeling inspired rather than just ticking it off a list.

Shiratani UnsuikyoIf you only have an hour or so then this tour would head straight up to see Yayoi sugi – a 3,000 year old sugi nestled on the hillside – and through some very scenic forest along a paved route.  A longer walk would also include the moss forest further up the valley.

Much of this tour uses the old Kusukawa forestry trail that was used by the loggers to bring down roof tiles that were cut and processed next to the felled tree.  The tour follows the Kusukawa Trail and goes passed a number of interesting sugi trees including Kuguri sugi and Nanahon sugi.

A short tour of 4 hours can also include the moss forest scene that is often referred to as the Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) garden.

Heavy rain can force the Shiratani Unsuikyo forest to be closed due to some dangerous river crossings, but we are often able to take alternative courses that can avoid these dangerous river crossings.

There are many water access points along this hike.
