The Hagami Waterfall hike is a short hike close to Miyanoura and so if you arrive to Yakushima around midday, or intend to depart around midday, then this hike is an economical use of time on the island.
The route to the waterfall is rarely hiked and the trail is not clearly marked. However, it only takes a little over 30 minutes and once the waterfall is in view then it very quickly becomes a rewarding excursion. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is not deep (it's barely deep enough to soak your feet in!), but there are a number of pools to swim in further down the waterfall, so this quick trip could easily be extended into a half day outing, if not longer.
Aside from it being a short hike with a number of surprises included along the way, the Hagami Waterfall trail is in between Shiratani Unsuikyo and Miyanoura and so a good full day could be had by combining the waterfall with a few hours at Shiratani Unsuikyo.
On the way down from the waterfall a short side trip to an old 'mountain entry' shrine is a worthwhile place to visit.
